Pain and Behavior
We put the following slide series together for Pain Awareness Month in September but wanted to put it here on the blog too so it’s available year round.
Pain and behavior is such an important topic in the dog behavior and care field. The degree to which pain issues are under diagnosed and under treated is massive. Awareness is growing but it can still be an uphill battle to get dogs the help they need.
Among our own client and personal dogs, we have seen repeated clean bills of health in dogs where further investigation ultimately found issues ranging from painful teeth to arthritis to hip dysplasia to lumbosacral syndrome to torn ligaments to ear infections to allergies to problems with digestion to misdiagnosed canine cognitive dysfunction to buckshot fragments embedded in bone and so much more.
Diagnostics can be costly and pain is not always (or even often) readily obvious but we have to get better at finding and treating it. That includes long term management and making adjustments when they are needed.
